Musical Art Quintet blends world music influences with the chamber music ensemble, infusing rhythms from Argentina, Cuba, Africa, Jazz, Classical and even Electronica into their own style of music. Musicians are: quintet leader Sascha Jacobsen (bass), Matthew Szemela (violin), Michelle Walther (violin), Charith Premawardhana (viola), and Lewis Patzner (cello)
Joining MAQ will be guest artists Christianna Valentina (piano/voice) and tango dancers Debbie Goodwin & John Campbell of Alma del Tango.

Tango Night, an intimate evening by Alma del Tango, explores the rich diversity of the dance, from the close embrace of the social dance floor to the fast flying legs of the fantasia stage. Bay Area’s top professional tango dancers express their unique styles to the live music of the virtuosic international tango ensemble, Trio Garufa. Romantic, passionate, even quirky, these dancers dazzle the eye and capture the heart. Now in its 30th year, San Francisco’s Argentine Tango community is one of the largest outside of Buenos Aires and is embraced by a multitude of nationalities and ages.

The concert will focus on the different periods and styles of the Argentine Tango from its origins in Buenos Aires in 1882 to the Golden Age of Tango in the 1930-50’s and finally the revolutionary age of Tango by Astor Piazzolla in the 1960’s. Alejandro Ziegler’s own compositions will round off the fascinating historical tour of this exciting, passionate and romantic style of music. Every piece of music is presented and explained, so the audience can understand the social context in which Tango developed.
